First and Foremost, before I post the following information : A DSM is NOT, I repeat, is NOT an import. The Talon/Laser/Eclipse models from 1990-1999 were manufactured and assembled in NORMAL IL. Not Japan. Anyway.

Below I'm just going to post a few basic things about the 4G63(t) and also helpful habits that will help to keep your Talon, Laser, or Eclipse running healthy.

::Basic Tune-Up choices::

1a : Spark plugs? : For our vehicles they enjoy NGK, specifically the BPR6ES'. Under high boost conditions (16+psi) BPR7ES' are recommended.
1b : Spark plug gap? : The proper gap for our spark plugs should be .028

2 : Timing Belt replacement? : Timing belts are the true weak point of our vehicles. It is recommended that the Timing belt be changed every 60,000 miles. Also, it is smart to install a new water-pump at this point.

3 : Transmission fluid? : ((Manual Related)) There are several 'good' brands out there, but the fact that our syncro's are the weakest part of 5spd DSM transmissions, we need to do everything we can to keep them healthy. Gm Synchromesh has been proven to be one of, if not the best transmission fluid choice for our 5Spd transmissions.

4 : Oil choice? : There are several different choices out there, but for myself and several others, I have always been more confident in 10w-40 Mobil 1. This is more an opinion, though.

5 : Fuel Choice? : It is NOT option to run anything other than Premium grade fuel in our vehicles. If you do, please do NOT enter boost. Low grade fuel CAN and WILL destroy these engine's under boost conditions.

::Testing::

1 : Boost Leak Testing : If you drive a turbo'd DSM, it is imperative that you make and USE a boost leak tester. A single bad leak can lead to rich conditions, loss of power, and money out of your pocket in fuel costs. : http://www.vfaq.com/mods/ICtester.html

2 : Compression/Leakdown Testing : If your vehicle is running funny and you don't know why... a Compression test and a leakdown test can tell you a lot. : http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/arti...n-testing.html

3 : Coolant Pressure Testing : This is basically done the same way as the Boost leak testing, only you apply a small amount or pressure to the coolant system instead of the charge system. This is show any leaks in the system other than those that may be related to a HG and leaking into your combustion chambers.

::FAQs::

Q : Can I vent my BOV to the atmosphere?
A : No, not unless you have setup a GM MAP and MAFT translator. When the charge system is relieved via the BOV, our ECU's and MAF's have already calculated that the recirculated intake WILL be there. If you do NOT recirculate your BOV you will run extremely rich under this condition, especially between shifts.

Q : What Years were the 6 and 7 bolt 4G63's found in?
A : The 6 Bolt 4G63 was found in 90 - 92.5 year models. After this year they were made with 7 bolt cranks.

Q : What's the theory on crankwalk?
A : The theory is that 7 Bolts crankwalk all the time and that 6 bolt's are immune. The amount of crankwalk incidents are severely exaggerated and often are misdiagnosed to be crankwalk. The prime suspect for crankwalk is the thrust bearing from the 95 to 97 year models. In 98 through 99, the thrust bearing in the Talon and Eclipse 4G63T were revised to eliminate the threat of crankwalk.

Q : How much boost can I push on a stock setup?
A : That depends on the year of the car. A rule of thumb is to not go over 16ish PSI. At this point you are already getting close to what the stock injectors can handle, much more and you will meet the brick wall that is fuel cut. Also, factor in that the 2G turbo's are fairly crappy and max out shortly after this amount of boost. Another factor is the BOV, answered below.

Q : What are the differences in BOV's?
A : The 1G's BOV was made of a type of aluminum, making it stronger and more durable. The 2G DSM's were made of plastic and usually began leaking after a short time under boost conditions of 12+PSI. A common upgrade is to remove the 2G BOV and replace it with the BOV off a 1G

Q : What are the different stock turbo's?
A : For the 1st Generation DSM, the 14B. For the 2nd Generation it was the T-25. The 14B is superior to the T-25, outputting more CFM and being more durable. This is a common upgrade for 2G drivers.

Q : What was the lightest of the 1st Generation DSMs?
A : This is, hands down, the Laser. The Laser was quite a bit lighter than it's counter-parts the Talon and Eclipse.

Q : Are DSM's Imports?
A : No. All DSM's were built and assembled in Normal IL.

Q : In terms of DSMs, are AWD's faster than FWD?
A : No. As far as launching an AWD DSM is hands-down superior due to it's all wheel drive grip. As far as power, acceleration, and weight, the FWD's have the AWD beat. The AWD's are heavier due to their addition of a bulkier transmission, driveline, and rear end assembly. This also drains their acceleration factor. The other thing to compound it further is the drive-line parasitic power-loss. Due to more moving and flexing components, the AWD DSM's suffer from a calculated 10% power reduction opposed to the FWD models.

Q : What can the stock crank handle, HP wise?
A : The stock 6 Bolt crank has been known to handle power-ranges above 1000HP.

Q : What are the HP specs for the 4G63T?
A : That is determined by the year. 1G : 180-195 hp. 2G : 210 hp.

Q : What years are considered DSM's?
A : Any Talon, Laser, or Eclipse made from 1990 - 1999 are considered to be part of the DSM family.

Q : What does DSM stand for?
A : DSM stands for Diamond Star Motors, a Collaboration between Chrysler and Mitsubishi.
