What engine do you have in it now? It's written on the block (not the valve cover, but on the actual block itself)? Knowing this can help people give you recommendations for your options.

I think every one wants what you are thinking. Cheap HP. The motor in your car now is a D16. If I was you, I would just boost it. They can handle a ton of boost even with stock internals. But if you must put a new motor in, I would go a B18c. Its from a gsr. The B series doesnt hurt valves if it jumps time and they are nearly destructable. I have a b18b1 in my 94 integra with a few simple bolt ons and I run an 8.83 in 1/8. Its enough to surprise every one there. Good luck!!

HP does not usually come cheap. Your best bet would be to check around for a used turbo kit. A new kit would put you in the price range for a swap, so used would be the way to go. Careful though, you need to do some research for yourself and know what to look for when inspecting a used turbo. You don't want to get into having to rebuild or supplement parts to an incomplete kit. Stay away from those Chinese Ebay kits also. Most of them are very "generic" and unless you can do fabrication/modification work to them, they will be useless (and often unreliable). If you stay low on the boost level, you can pull it off without any other mods such as fuel upgrade, and still see a good performance gain. Maybe not the mosnter HP most people dream of, but an increase that you'll notice and enjoy. GL.

Its an automatic. Its not going to be quick and its pretty pointless to boost an automatic. Doing a complete auto to manual swap is pretty involved. So unless you dont mind your car to be down for a few days, I would just start with something else. (I dont know if this car is your DD or not)

Buy a shell for $500. Start there.
